t h e m a y f i l e s is foremost a family blog, chronicling everyday life. Life including natural, healthy eating (with recipes thrown in at random), home educating (with ideas popping up sporadically), an attempt to homestead on .2 acres (with very meager yields), raising 3 of 4 children with a rare genetic disorder, and lots of highly personal family triumphs and failures. You may also find an eclectic array of musings on politics, exercise, sewing, emergency preparedness, backyard chickens, and religion. This blog isn't a campaign to glorify anyone or anything. Just simply a record.

Dangerous Deal

I'm trying to work out some sort of deal with Callista (granted it is bit risky on my part ;) )...she changes all Emmett's diapers, and I change all the new baby's. Sounds good to me.

You will also take note of the disposable diapers being used here. December, in the heart of my first trimester I packed up those cloth diapers with glee!

I do plan to use cloth with the new baby. Cloth are far easier with a breastfeeding baby, than a two year old.

There are times and seasons for everything.

Cloth Diapering: Everything You Wanted to Know

Above you see some essentials, a baby with a really cute bum, diapers, spray bottles, wipes and a wet bag.

You can read a million different opinions on cloth diapering. Is it better or worse for the environment? Pockets, folds or All-in-Ones... I won't try to go through all of these. I will only give you my recommendations based on cloth diapering for the last 3 years with 2 different children.

Sidenote...Don't try to cloth diaper for the first 4 weeks. Just my personal opinion. Having a newborn baby and a beat up and cut up (in my case) body is enough to worry about. But by 4 weeks I find my babies stop pooping after every feeding and I am feeling ready to tackle life again...kind of.

What you Need:

Diapers (about $50-$250)
Start with 3-6 diapers. This is a good amount to test the waters to see if cloth diapering is right for you. I use pocket diapers. I like the flexibilty in absorbency. At night I stuff in 2 inserts to keep Emmett dry. I find the covers stay perfectly stain free. After trying a bunch of brands, I think the very best are Bum Genius and Haute Pockets.

My preference is based on functionality, longevity, quality, and cuteness. I do not recommend any of the other brands I have tried. I really dislike snaps. (After Callista I had to put new elastic in the legs of my diapers, but they work perfectly with that small mend.) I now have about 16 diapers and at least 50 inserts. This is plenty with laundering every 1-3 days.

Wet Bags (about $25)
I recommend two. A small wet bag to put in your diaper bag or purse, for changing on the go. Then a large bag to store diapers in. I use wahmies but I have seen some fun new brands out since I bought mine 3 years ago. Look for your bag to have a hemp or terry cloth swatch to put essential oils on. This masks the odor.

To store in my wet bag, I remove the insert, then shake soiled diapers into the toilet, and swirl if necessary. Sometimes I am lazy and just throw the diapers in rolled up. Honestly it works too. But you can't leave them more than a couple days.

This is my big wet bag I keep in my laundry room next to the toilet and washer.

Spray Bottles
(about $3-$10)
I recommend 3 spray bottles for diaper changing. I just bought mine at the groccery store. I have one 4 oz bottle for my diaper bag or purse and two 12 oz bottles for my two diaper changing locations in my house. My favorite solution: Fill with warm water and add 3 drops lavendar, and 5 drops tea tree or chamomile oil.

Flannel Wipes (about $5-$20)
You can make your own by just buying flannel and surging the edges or buy them already made. I bought the most basic. I have about 50. Which works great, except when my girls snitch them to use as their dolls "baby blankets" and other random uses. Callista is often found spraying one wet and smoothing her hair out. It is a good look for her, lol! I spray my babies bottoms, then wipe clean with the dry wipes. I just put the wipes inside the diaper to throw in the wet bag.

Detergents (about $25 for 6 month supply)
I use Charlies Soap, baking soda and vinegar. I love Charlies Soap Liquid detergent. It is biodegradable, all natural....and you only need a couple tablespoons. It lasts forever. I bought it when I started cloth diapering and now use it on all of our laundry. If I find my diapers are starting to smell I strip them.
Stripping Cloth Diapers

Wash once normally with soap

Wash with 1/2 c vinegar
Wash with 1/2 c baking soda

Wash in plain water, until there are no bubbles when the water is agitated during wash cycle.

Always be sure to run your diapers through a cold water rinse before you wash them normally. Follow with washing on hot. And always use an extra rinse. Never use bleach or harsh grocery store detergents. Charlies Soap is available online and is affordable. I order 2 gallons at a time. I haven't tried the powder. I may though.

My detergents and essential oil neatly tucked away in my new laundry room cabinet!

Essential Oils
(about $10-$30)
Lavender, tea tree, and chamomile are my favorites. They have antibacterial and healing properties. I use a few drops (I always change up the combination) in the final rinse cycle when I wash, in my wet bags, and in my wipee solution.

Wipee Solution
Water
3 drops lavender oil
3 drops chamomile or tea tree oil

Combine all in a spray bottle and keep with your diapering essentials.

*Note...Always wash your diapers with as much water as your machine allows. I have heard it is very difficult to cloth diaper with front loaders which are so popular now. Unless your machine has an adjustable water level you may not be able to get your diapers clean.

**Another Note...Hang your diapers to dry on a line in the sun whenever you can. The UV light act as a sterilizer and stain bleacher! And plus they look oh so cute hanging up.

These are the basics. It definitely requires an initial investment. But the majority of these costs are one time occurrences. I buy all of my cloth diapering essentials at Nickis Diapers. I like her site, it easy to navigate and the prices are competitive.

I have never paid extra for organic, hemp, or fancy inserts. The cotton inserts that come with the diapers have always been sufficient.

There are lots of other nifty doo dads, but these essentials have gotten me by. I do think I am going to invest $45 for a diaper sprayer. They look really neat.

My Five-Year-Olds first Diaper Change

Behold the results of Ellery's first solo diaper change. I was in the shower. She was so proud of herself. Despite being put on backwards, the velcro tabs held fast through all Emmett's cruising and army crawling. It was even a poopy diaper! Upon inspection I found his chubby little buns semi-clean...not kissable but not bad. She neatly folded up the dirty diaper ready for the wash....because yes, you saw right those are cloth diapers...and placed it in the wash bag. I love cloth. He is wearing a Haute Pockets brand. One of our favorites. Thankfully we didn't snap a photo in the "blossom pink," he doesn't look too manly, but Callista's little bottom sure used to look cute in that shade :)
A plug for cloth diapering...so easy even a five-year-old can do it.

Go Cougs

Brent and the girls spent the day tailgating and palling around with Cosmo at the BYU football game. Our good friend Coach Wardenburg (BYU basketball) treated the trio to VIP, on field passes. Enjoy a pictoral of the adventure!

El and Pip getting ready to grill up some burgers. (Was it odd to anyone to read a vegetarian has a freezer bursting with beef? Go figure.)

The three trouble makers right in the thick of things. In fact the marching band actually took the field and marched right through them.

The girls have not stopped talking about Cosmo. Apparently later in the game he dressed up as Darth Vader. That was incredible exciting for them. How do they know who Darth Vader is?

No questions here if she is having a good time.

Pip and Coach. Thanks again to the big man.

Coach Bronco and the Cougs storm the field.

Up in the Nose Bleed and still smiling.

So where were the Goo and I you ask? A quiet romantic afternoon for the two of us. After an unusally long nap (think an unusually quiet house) we headed to the fabric and health food store. Two highly precarious destinations with 3 children in tote, but I thought completely manageable with myself and my little man. My high hopes were dashed when in true "man fashion" Emmett had zero tolerance for the fabric store.

I envisioned leisurely browsing through pattern books, while he gooed in his carseat. Not quite. I hurriedly flipped through the pages--which he lunged for, and bawled over upon denial--grabbed some elastic--my cloth diapers from Callista's days need new elastic--and that was it.

Overall, a good day was had by all.

Diaper Bag: What's in Yours?

So today I was thinking about diaper bags (BTW, I love mine, it is Ju*Ju*Be, I totally recommend it www.ju-ju-be.com, tons of space, antibacterial, and super cool. It was a gift from my husbands awesome aunts and uncles) what we as moms keep in them, and what it says about us. Here is what you will find in mine on any given day:

1-A year supply of fruit leather, of course only our favorite flavors. We promptly recycle the large build-up of raspberry and strawberry as our monthly donation for preschool treats.

2-Nukie and Suction-My children have serious pacifier attachment until we drag them to build-a-bear and stuff all the nuks inside a bear. Ellery was 3, but Callista was 2, so we are getting better. 2 of my kids have serious mucus issues so I won't be caught dead without the suction. Although maybe Ellery is getting a little old for that.

3-An extra outfit, because the only time Emmett has blow-outs is when I am in the bank or at the grocery store.

4-Cloth Diapering Essentials, what right eco-minded mom doesn't use cloth diapers? Okay so I know there is some debate on water vs waste. Personally I don't want 1,000's of my kids diapers piled up in landfills. Also who wants to rub nasty chemicals all over their cute little bottoms. My wipe mixture: spring water and a few drops each of chamomile and lavender oil. Complete the set with some nice soft flannel. Check out www.nickisdiapers.com for the best diapers and tons of great tips.

4-Goat and Toad. This is classic, believe me. Well maybe not but it is perfect for Ellery who is just learning "long o".

5-Of course a Cap Trapper. How could any sane mom leave home without one. It provides a perfect activity in a pinch, like waiting forever for a prescription or outside of preschool. And no one wants crayons and markers floating around everywhere in the corners of your bag. A shameless plug, of course. To fit in your purse or kids bags use the little mini pip squeak markers. My girls adore those.

So now you know, I do everything in my power to eliminate refined sugar from my kids diets (why do they have suckers at the bank?). I have strange kids with tons of boogers. We read books about goats and toads (because I am definitely making sure my kids can read by age 2 which is unbelievably crucial, heaven forbid they have time to play). I am mildly fanatic about protecting my kids from yucky disposables. My baby has perfect bowel-timing. And finally, I am ultra-prepared with the best marker case ever my cap trapper! What does your diaper bag say about you?
