t h e m a y f i l e s is foremost a family blog, chronicling everyday life. Life including natural, healthy eating (with recipes thrown in at random), home educating (with ideas popping up sporadically), an attempt to homestead on .2 acres (with very meager yields), raising 3 of 4 children with a rare genetic disorder, and lots of highly personal family triumphs and failures. You may also find an eclectic array of musings on politics, exercise, sewing, emergency preparedness, backyard chickens, and religion. This blog isn't a campaign to glorify anyone or anything. Just simply a record.

Precious Moments

Callista: Mom does Rapunzel go to church on Sundays?
* * *
Ellery: Mom can Jesus fly?
Me: Well, He isn't bound by the same laws that we are on earth. He controls everything.
Ellery: I bet he could change my fan so easy...pointing to the ceiling fan in her room
* * *
Emmett: Mmm...nuzzling his very special Alpaca fur bear he wont part with
Emmett: Begins to pet Alpaca bear. More feverishly now. His fat finger wedges into a hole. He rips out the fur and stuffing...EHHHH! In terror he throws down his bear and points his fat little finger at it, scared it will come to pieces at any minute.
Me: Sew up the holes again. Grateful Mimi has offered another authentic Alpaca fur bear for christmas. The hide on little Goo mans is just getting too brittle.

Ellery's First Piano Recital

Ellery began taking piano lessons in June, soon after she turned 6-years-old. We are very proud of her. Today she attended and performed in her first recital. She was as confident and together as ever.
She was quite nervous when she saw these big doors. I think her fur cape gave her some added confidence.

Piano began with a great deal of enthusiasm. After about 6 weeks the practice meltdowns started. Two weeks of that and I thought I was going off the deep end any minute. I called her wonderful teacher, who is the most positive, loving teacher, I have ever met or seen in action, and she gave me some pointers. Since then, things have only been onward and upward.
Now she doesn't beg to practice every single day. She would in a perfect world. But she is cooperative and cheerful for the majority of the time, once we get going :) and as long as there is at least a 25 cent reward!
Ellery was first. This is her teacher showing her where to go and what to do a few minutes before the recital began.

I was flabbergasted by the talented young people who performed at this recital. It was phenomenal. In fact our little babysitter, who is only 13, played Prelude III by Gershwin and Wedding Day at Troldhagen Opus 65 No. 6 by Grieg. Wow. Most powerful was to watch Ellery listen to these young people play. Their display of dedication and talent was worthy of her emulation. I never remember hearing recitals like this. A teacher makes all the difference. We are lucky to have found the perfect one for Ellery.
Ellery looking intense just moments before. The glitter lipgloss adds to the intensity.

The Recital Introduction...done in body builder pose :)
Here's what she said in her mouse-like voice:

"My name is Ellery Davidson and I shall play I am a Child of God by Petit, Egyptian Dance by Saint-Saens, The Chapel Doors by Read, and Surprise Symphony by Hayden."

I am a Child of God...this one was absolutely perfect! The bouncing feet are priceless.

Egyptian Dance...this one was a good exercise in keeping going when you find a mistake. She actually played the second line twice, modified the third line and finally got to her repeat and played the whole song through almost flawless.

The Chapel Doors...perfect.

Surprise Symphony...actually this piece was nearly flawless, except in her attempts at dramatic dynamics she played some keys so softly she didn't push hard enough to hear them. Bless her heart.

She ran off so fast she forgot to bow. What a wonderful accomplishment for her very first recital. Of course we got her some flowers and celebrated with some sparkling apple cider and chocolate pudding (made with avacados and agave).

Princesses on Ice

This is one of those occasions being parents to little girls is all about. Here we are all ready to go. Ellery was feeling very grown up in a brand new fluorescent shirt and yes tennis shoes! She picked out some glittery black ones. Callista was thrilled to dress up as Belle.
We were so close (second row) we could literally reach out and touch them.
The show kept both Ellery and Callista mesmerized.
She kept wondering if they were really singing, were they the same princesses she saw at disneyland...
Cinderella was our fan favorite. The production was excellent. The skating great, the costumes and scenery fantastic. A new tradition, I hope. And we will stick with the VIP seating.

Plug Your Ears

This was too cute not to document. The blender is a bit loud.

Trouble.

These chickens need a coop. They are eating my house!!! Or at least the insulation on my air conditioning pipe.

I had to laugh at an article my father-in-law sent me from USA Today about backyard chickens. It said "I just can't think of any drawbacks to them." Hah. They should come check out my garden and pipe insulation.

Homeschooling Math

By the far the best "program" I purchased for our homeschooling is the Shiller Math Program. I absolutely love it. The girls gobble it up. In fact Callista actually cries when I tell her we finally have to stop Math, and she just begs for more. No exaggeration here.

I actually think it would be a great program to have around to supplement school math. It is based on the Montesorri method. The lessons are quick and completely scripted. You could do it with no prep in just about 15 minutes a day. We usually do about 5 or 6 lessons in a day. Sometimes less, dependent on the difficulty of the concept. It is full of manipulatives and appropriate for both my children.

It is not huge on fact repetition, but I am okay with that.

Brainstorming Christmas Dresses

Here are my ideas for Christmas dresses. I like the idea of doing something soft and flowy. I haven't ever made the girls a dress like that. I will have to run the ideas by them and check the fabric store.

I love the sleeves and satin embellishments on this one. I think in a different color, maybe cream or red?

What struck me about this dress, were the long flowing sleeves and the crocheted detailing. Classic but stylish. I also love the neck and soft pleats. I don't know how to crochet.

I love the bright red of this dress. Also I have always wanted to do a bubble skirt. Never have. The girls adore rhinestones. This one will most likely be their favorite.

Sippin' Smoothie Through a Straw

I just love this picture. The little goo bear will put down anything with a passion!

A couple months ago I purchased a new blender. It has made all the difference in our green smoothies and nut milks. I love it. I already have 315 blends on it, according to the counter. Clearly it is getting used!

Brent is our master smoothies maker. It is wonderful. I wake up about 5:20 to workout. By the time I get home around 7 am the kids are up, dressed, and well nourished with an amazing, inventive fruit and vegetable concoction. What are great hubby!

Of Stinky Shoes and Fitting In

Several Days Ago...

Ellery: Mom, I really want some new tennis shoes.
Me: Hmmm. Ellery I think we decided we don't buy you tennis shoes because you refuse to wear socks. Remember your shoes get so stinky. (In fact the only shoes we buy for her are crocs because this is such an issue!)
A Day or Two Later, Getting Ready for Bed

Ellery: Dad can you get me a pair of socks please?
Brent: Socks? (bewildered)
Ellery: Yes Dad. I need to get used to them.
Brent: Get used to them?
Ellery: Oh Dad. All the children at school have the cutest tennis shoes. I really want some. I am the only one who doesn't wear tennis shoes. I want to try so hard to get my feet used to socks so I can have cute shoes too.

A Safe Garden Hose

I don't know where I've been, but I just discovered that you don't drink out of garden hoses because they leach lead into your water. Regular hoses contain lead in the recycled plastic they are manufactured from and in the brass fittings. So that is the funny taste. Huh. My husband enlightened me, when he brought this home. 25 ft of lead free garden hose. This one was only $10 at Walmart. It is made out of medical grade plastic with nickel plating. Drink with pleasure tomatoes and little munchkins.

Close Your Eyes Quick!

My neighbor walked by and this is what she saw... (I think he though this was some sort of motorcycle...that would explain the look)
On our way to the park, yes that is Emmy on a big wheel, mounted in the chariot...
Yes. That is El, wearing my rollerblades. (She is getting some for Christmas!) She looks safe here, but it was not safe.

I suggested my neighbor kindly close her eyes and pretend she didn't see us engaging in all these precarious activities.
But the park sure was fun!

Halloween Candy Craft

My girls just couldn't wait to make the turkeys. So this morning before church we hauled out all the halloween candy, picked out some apples from the garage, and went crazy decorating.
This has easily become a tradition in our house. We are only in the second year but I don't see it stopping soon. All the candy works great except for maybe the m&m's.
This year however we are protecting our little turkeys from the infamous fruit flies. They are now locked away in the glass cabinet sweetly smiling out at us, and tempting those tiny little terrors.
